Muscat: Over 50,000 teachers reported for duty to public schools across Oman in preparation for the new academic year, which officially began on Saturday, 17 August.

A statement by the Ministry of Education read: “The Ministry of Education is pleased to congratulate the faculty and administrators of schools in Oman on the occasion of the start of the new academic year 2019/2020 on Sunday, wishing them a successful school year."

“The teaching staff this year is 56,717 people strong, including 18,112 male teachers and 38,605 female teachers,” the statement added.

This year, over a thousand new Omani graduates have been hired as teachers to keep up with the increase in the number of students and to ensure that teachers can perform their jobs to educate Oman’s future generations.

The statement by the Ministry added: “There have been 1,169 new teachers were hired and 406 more teachers have been contracted to teach using year-long contracts (temporary contracts) from the group of Omani graduates in order to complete the number of teachers for the upcoming school year."

The Directorate General of Education in Muscat said that the teachers who have been transferred to work in Muscat will be designated to schools on Tuesday and begin work on Wednesday, 21 August, and that newly employed teachers will begin working on the morning of Sunday, 25 August.
