New OOC Chairman to be elected on Thursday

Muscat: The election process to elect the new Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) chairman to complete the current Board of Directors’ term (2017-2020) will be completed on Thursday.

The OOC General Assembly had earlier adopted regulations for the elections in accordance with the recent OOC Statutes amendments governing the related electoral procedures to ensure the principles of transparency, independence and equality.

The GA approved the formation of the Election and Appeals Committees in accordance with the requirements of the regulations for two independent entities who have legal competencies and good experience in sports fields.

The Elections Committee held five meetings during which it decided on all matters related to the election process. At the first meeting, the Committee elected its Chairman to be considered as the committee's rapporteur on behalf of the staff in addition to set the electoral procedures programme. In the second meeting, it set the election’s date, approve the election procedures, candidacy forms, and draft for the local press on May 22, 2019.

At the third meeting, it received the preliminary list of candidates in which two applications from Sheikh Saif bin Hilal Al Hosani and Sayed Khalid bin Hamad Al Busaidi were received. At the fourth meeting, the Committee adopted a list of representatives of the GA members who are entitled to attend and vote.

The OOC has submitted the list of members which includes 15 members in accordance with Article (6) of the Elections Regulations and in accordance with Article (15) OOC Regulations. The final list of candidates shall be issued after the end of the period of appeals. The Election Committee has not received any notification from the Appeals Committee against the candidates.

The Election Committee will conduct and manage the election process to be held today at 11:00 am at OOC to announce the winner to complete the remaining term of the Board of Directors (2017 - 2020).
