Things you can do to tackle sunburn

With the mercury on the rise, sun protection should become one of the most important parts of our skincare routine. We all know sunscreens are an absolute must; but then there are those days when we just forget all about it and spend those few extra minutes under the sun. And what do we have? Sunburn! Here are 5 things you can do to tackle those burns.

Stop further damage
If you’ve got a sunburn, instead of fussing over how bad it is, first get out of the sun. Getting burnt is bad enough, and staying under the sun will only make things worse. Go indoors immediately and then assess the damage.

Hydrate with fluids
If the sunburn is bad, it puts you at further risk of dehydration. Drink lots of water and other fluids like coconut water that will replenish the electrolytes in your body. Grab a big bottle and keep sipping on it throughout.

Leave the blisters alone
The worst thing you can do to your blisters is pop them, peel them, or scratch them. This can lead to further infections and even permanent scarring of the skin. No matter how tempting it might be to get your fingers working on it, resist the urge.

Soothe the sunburn
A cool bath would be the best thing to do. It’ll cool your body and soothe the burns. But if you aren’t close to a shower room, grab a cold towel, and gently dab your body with it. Be careful to not scrub. Follow it up with lots of hydrating lotions. Aloe or oatmeal infused lotions would be your best bet.

Don’t repeat
Learn from your mistakes and don’t get burnt again. That seems like the obvious thing to do; but for those who love their time under the sun and a little tanning every now and then, remember that repeated sunburns can lead to irreversible damage, early wrinkling of the skin and even put you at a risk of cancer.
