Trump-UK feud escalates

London: US President Donald Trump lashed out at UK Prime Minister Theresa May, escalating a transatlantic feud that ignited over the weekend.

In tweets published on Tuesday, Trump called May "foolish."

"The wacky Ambassador that the UK foisted upon the United States is not someone we are thrilled with, a very stupid guy. He should speak to his country, and Prime Minister May, about their failed Brexit negotiation, and not be upset with my criticism of how badly it was handled. I told @theresa_may how to do that deal, but she went her own foolish way-was unable to get it done."

He added, "A disaster! I don’t know the Ambassador but have been told he is a pompous fool. Tell him the USA now has the best Economy & Military anywhere in the World, by far and they are both only getting bigger, better and stronger.....Thank you, Mr. President!"

The diplomatic dispute between the two longtime allies began after a series of confidential memos by the UK ambassador to the US Kim Darroch were leaked. In the memos, the envoy gave a negative assessment about the government of Britain's closest ally.

Britain's Foreign Office did not dispute the veracity of the memos.

"The British public would expect our ambassadors to provide ministers with an honest, unvarnished assessment of the politics in their country," a spokeswoman said.

The British government has launched an inquiry to investigate the leak of sensitive memos, covering a period beginning in 2017.
