Pilot killed after two jets collide in Germany

Berlin: A pilot was killed after two Eurofighter warplanes collided mid-air and crashed in the northern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Germany, the country's military announced.

In a statement, the army of Germany said that the two planes had collided with each other during an air combat mission that included a third plane. Both pilots ejected from their planes but only one survived. Medics rescued the survivor and took him to the hospital.

Germany's Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen travelled to the scene of the accident immediately. She expressed her sympathy to the pilot's relatives and thanked the forces and people for their help "at this difficult hour."

The cause for the collision of the two combat aircraft remains unclear, according to the country's army.
