Fifth phase of restoration at Qalhat complete

Muscat: The fifth phase of restoration work in the ancient city of Qalhat has been completed according to the Ministry of Heritage and Culture.

The Ministry recently completed the restoration in cooperation with the World Monuments Fund as part of the "Qalhat Development Project" which was launched in January 2013.

The aim of the project is to conduct archaeological surveys and excavations of the site in addition to restoring and rehabilitating the ancient city.

The ancient city is one of the most important cultural heritage sites in the Sultanate, dating back to the 11th century.

The work focused on the restoration work in the famous mosque, which was mentioned by some travellers, including Ibn Battuta.

Restoration of the mosque lasted four months in which experts participated in the revival of the remains of the mosque, as well as some of its sections containing the fragile plaster layers according to the international procedures and standards in this field.
