Xi Jinping makes historic visit to North Korea

Pyongyang: Chinese Premier Xi Jinping became the first Chinese president to visit North Korea since 2005, as he met his counterpart Kim Jong-un in an attempt to boost bilateral ties between the two nations.

The two have met four times previously in China and are expected to discuss North Korea’s nuclear programme and economic issues.

China and North Korea are important trade partners.

This meeting comes a week before the Chinese president is set to meet US President Donald Trump at the G20 summit and after talks between Jong-un and Trump failed in Hanoi in February regarding North Korea’s denuclearisation.

Xi became the first Chinese president to visit North Korea in 14 years and this is his first visit to North Korea since he took power in 2012.

The meeting marks strengthening of ties between the two nations that established diplomatic ties 70 years ago.

North Korea on the other hand views this meeting as game-changing as its other diplomatic relations seem to be failing.
