India imposes retaliatory tariffs on US goods

New Delhi: India has imposed tariffs several US products with duties as high as 70 percent on some products.

The move was made by the Indian government following Washington's decision to withdraw India's preferential trade status in early June.

Products hit by the new tariffs, which go into effect today (Sunday, June 16) include almonds and apples.

In its announcement, India's Ministry of Finance said the decision was "in the public's interest."

On June 1, US President Donald Trump ended India's preferential trade status under 'Generalised System of Preference' (GSP).
