Tropical storm unlikely to affect Oman

Muscat: With a tropical depression system brewing south-east of the Arabian Sea, officials at the Sultanate’s Public Authority for Civil Aviation have reassured Omanis that the situation is being monitored, with no effects on the country expected in the next three days.
Since June 3, The National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre has been monitoring weather conditions in the Arabian Sea and an area 1,610km from the Sultanate’s coast at Ras Madrakah.
PACA will issue all reports and statements and if necessary, warnings, in line with the developments in the weather situation, calling on citizens and residents to take the information from its official sources.
The depression is likely to become a cyclone storm and will be named as ‘Vayu’, a name suggested by India, which means wind.
The World Meteorological Organisation has a detailed procedure of naming the cyclone.
According to its official website, the WMO maintains rotating lists of names which are appropriate for each Tropical Cyclone basin. If a cyclone is particularly deadly or costly, then its name is retired and replaced by another one.
The Northern Indian Ocean Names are given by eight nations. India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan and Thailand send names of tropical cyclones.
Despite the intensification of the deep depression into a tropical storm in the Arabian Sea, the Public Authority of Civil Aviation (PACA) has announced that the Sultanate will not be affected in the next three days.
Oman’s meteorology authority is continuing to monitor the development of the storm. In an online statement, PACA said, “The National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre observed today (June 10 2019), the formation of a tropical depression system southeast of the Arabian Sea located at longitude 7.1 and latitude 12 with estimated surface wind speed around the centre ranging between 17 and 27 knots, and away from the Sultanate coast (Ras Madrakha) by an approximate distance of 1,610 km.”
According to PACA the Sultanate’s coast will not be directly impacted by the intensification of the depression in the coming days.
“The latest numerical weather prediction indicates a movement of the tropical depression towards north to northwest direction along the western coast of India with a probability of further intensification into a deep depression (28-33 knots) within the coming 24 hours and a tropical storm (34 to 63 knots) with the coming 48. There is no impact on the coastal areas of Oman within the next three days,” added PACA.
