Research institutes get greater say in programme management

Muscat: The Research Council (TRC) held its second meeting this year under the chair of His Highness Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq Al Said, Advisor to His Majesty the Sultan, Chairman of the TRC, in the presence of ministers, undersecretaries, the representatives of a number of academic and private institutions at Innovation Complex Muscat.
During the meeting, a number of reports were discussed realted to a number of programmes and projects of the TRC, as well as the follow-up of the implementation of a number of resolutions.
The Council approved the proposal to amend the open research grants programme, which is considered the first research support programme in the TRC that contributed to building research capacity in the Sultanate.
The proposed programme aims to increase the role of research institutions in developing and managing their research programmes by granting them the powers to evaluate, finance and follow up the research proposals within the institution, with a focus on supporting research that contributes to the implementation of national priorities and to achieve practical results that are applicable.
On the other hand, TRC Board members reviewed the results of the Science and Technology Indicators for the years 2016 and 2017 which are updated every two years in conjunction with the survey carried out by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics.
The TRC Board also adopted the proposed budget for the Council in 2019, which includes the requirements of various projects and programs implemented by the Council.
