Patience and perseverance make veteran Omani a top photographer

Advanced technologies are not enough to get the best photo; passion is more important, said Abdulrahman Al Hinai, one of the founders of the Oman Photography Society.
“Nowadays, photography is easier, therefore youngsters must not rush to take pictures for fame, but aim to gain experience,” Al Hinai added.
The 52-year-old began taking pictures in the 80s and specialises in capturing Omani people’s lives. “In my pictures, I always try to portray and highlight the lives of Omanis,” Al Hinai said.

“In the past, we were keen to select the scene before taking a picture, because the photographer had to consider buying the film and the cost of processing it, which was expensive, but now photographers can simply take thousands of pictures with the click of a button and then choose the best among them,” Al Hinai added.
According to Al Hinai, among the most important characteristics of a photographer are being patient and observant.
“It is very important for the photographer to be quick and intuitive to be able to capture emotions such as joy or sadness; this is hard and takes time and commitment.”

Al Hinai has published two books which include a collection of his pictures called Ceremonies and Celebrations of Oman and Oman: Land and People that document the Sultanate photographically.
Al Hinai won the Sultan Qaboos Prize for Cultural Creativity in Photography and he is the first Arabic photographer who won the FIAP medal in China in 2006.
Despite his long history in photography and his archives full of millions of pictures, Al Hinai is still keen to take a new photo every day.
“Nowadays, since the competition is more intense, I always try to prove myself and remain at the forefront of the list of Omani photographers.”
