New York mourns the victims of 9/11

New York: The nearly 3,000 people who died when hijacked jetliners crashed into the World Trade Centre were remembered in New York City on Tuesday, September 11, on the 17th anniversary of the September 11 attacks in 2001. Mourners gathered at the National September 11 Memorial plaza in Manhattan, for the annual reading of victims' names. Moments of silence were observed at 8:46 am EDT (1246 GMT), the time American Airlines Flight 11 smashed into the North Tower and at 9:03 am (1303 GMT) when United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower. More moments of silence came at 9:37 am (1337 GMT), when American Airlines Flight 77 hit the Pentagon; at 9:59 am (1359 GMT) when the South Tower collapsed; at 10:03 am (1403 GMT) when United Flight 93 hit the ground near Shanksville, Pennsylvania; and at 10:28 am (1428 GMT), when the North Tower fell.
