Domestic labour recruitment agency owner imprisoned, fined OMR1,000

Muscat: The owner of a domestic labour recruitment agency has been sent to prison for a month and fined OMR1,000 by the Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP).
The preliminary court in Sur issued a judgment against the accused for violating the Consumer Protection law, after he refused to refund a customer who had hired domestic help from his agency.
The case began when the department received a complaint from a consumer against manpower office breach of service. "The consumer contacted an agency officer to hire a domestic worker for OMR1,500. After receiving the worker, she refused to work, and the consumer then returned the worker to the office. The agency replaced her with another worker, but the second domestic worker was ill and returned to the office," the PACP said in its report.
The consumer demanded that the office refund his money, but they did not, which led him to file a complaint with the authority, who took the necessary action.
After the PACP investigation, it transferred the case to Public Prosecution, who took it to court. The accused was sentenced to a month in prison and fined OMR100, in addition to suspension of his licence to engage non-Omani labour force for one year, and an OMR900 civil fine.
