Indian dance group from Oman bags 13 medals in Canada

Muscat: A group of Indian classical dancers based in Oman have won 13 prizes in a dance tournament in Canada.
Leelangika, a group of Kathak dancers from Oman, participated in the recently-held Dance World Cup in Mont Tremblant, Canada. The group was led by renowned Kathak performer Jhumpa Chakraborty, a disciple of the Lucknow Gharana.
The group competed and won prizes in 13 categories. Over 8,000 dancers from countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, France, Germany, Indonesia, Russia, Turkey, and the United States of America participated in the competition.
The tournament is recognised by the International Dance Council – Paris, of which Leelangika has been a member of since 2016. The IDC, a non-governmental organisation founded in 1973, is based in the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) and is the official umbrella organisation for all forms of dance around the world.
Jhumpa and her team had been preparing for this event since early February 2018. All 13 categories in which the group competed were carefully chosen by Jhumpa, who also choreographed the routines herself. Leelangika’s medal tally at the end of the competition stood at three gold, seven silver, and three bronze medals, and they were also awarded a crystal trophy for garnering the highest score in three categories.
