Oman jumps eight spots on global innovation index

Muscat: The Sultanate jumped eight notches at the Global Innovation Index (GII) as it came 69th in 2018 compared to 77th in 2017; thanks to the continuous efforts made by the innovation stakeholders.
The index includes a number of criterion, such as the number of patency applications, which increased by 6 per cent in 2017 compared to 2016.
This provides decision makers with an overview about the innovation activity, which stimulates economic and social growth.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry played a big role in enhancing patency registration awareness through organising a number of seminars, in cooperation with a number of organisations, such as the Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Manpower, the public and private universities to spread awareness on the importance of registering the intellectual property rights for companies and startup businesses in a bid to protect their rights and innovation efforts.
The Ministry also seeks to enhance the efficiency of the patency department employees through international training.
The cooperation with the Industrial Innovation Centre contributed to supporting the innovators by guiding them on how to protect their ideas and innovations and register them with the Intellectual Property Department at the Ministry.
The Ministry takes part with other public organisations in the technical evaluation of the student projects and innovations. The patency employees evaluate these innovations as per the world class standards. They include the marketing value for these projects.
The GII is issued by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to measure the innovation performance of 126 countries round the world.
The 2018 index analyses the energy innovations in the next decade and provide the possible achievements in the field of energy production, storing, distribution and consumption.
