Construction company fined for building substandard house

Muscat: A construction company in the Wilayat of Samail in Al Dakhiliya was sentenced by the preliminary court to pay fines and repair costs for a brand new home with a leaking ceiling and cracks in the outer wall of the house.

A statement by the Public Authority for Consumer Protection read: “The consumer had agreed with the company to build a home, but when it was complete and he moved in, he noticed flaws in the house such as plumbing leaks in a restroom, water leaking from the ceiling, which caused damage to the roof, and cracks which had begun to appear in the home’s outer wall.”

At first, the consumer believed that speaking to the company directly would lead to positive results.

“The consumer contacted the owner of the company, who refused to fix the issues,” the statement by the authority added. “After which the consumer filed a complaint at the Directorate of Consumer Protection in Al Dakhiliya, which investigated the complaint and followed proper procedure. When the case file was complete, it was transferred to Public Prosecution in Samail, which transferred it to the Court of First Instance.”

The company was directed to pay a fine of OMR200 and to repair the damages to the new home, which amounted to OMR700.
