Royal Opera House Muscat unveils new season line-up

Muscat: The Royal Opera House Muscat (ROHM) will host a series of lavish operas, ballets and orchestras, as well concerts by legendary world and Arabic music stars.
ROHM yesterday unveiled its 2018-2019 season performances, which start on September 6 and conclude on May 4, 2019.
The stunning venue in Muscat, which opened in 2011, is about to commence its eighth season, with 40 new programmes and a total of 69 performances.
Here are some of the exciting performances that you wouldn’t want to miss:
Lakmé
Delibes’ beautiful opera set in India, relates the tragic love of a Hindu Priestess and a British officer against the backdrop of forbidden passions and military oppression. This exciting world premiere is directed by Davide Livermore. The orchestra and chorus of Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova will be conducted by Jordi Bernàcer from March 28-30, 2019.
La Traviata
This exciting new collaboration between Los Angeles Opera and ROHM of La Traviata is staged by Marta Domingo in a dazzlingly updated version of her 1920’s Art Deco vision. Plácido Domingo sings the role of Germont on February 7 and 9, whereas on February 10, he conducts the orchestra and chorus of Teatro Massimo di Palermo.
The Sleeping Beauty
The Sleeping Beauty, one of the best-loved ballets in the classical repertoire, has been freshly interpreted by The State Ballet of Georgia with choreography by Nina Ananiashvili and Alexei Fadeechev. The PKF – Prague Philharmonia Orchestra will perform under the baton of Alevtina Ioffe on November 8 and 9, 2018.
La Bayadère
Set in ancient royal India, the tale of La Bayadère pits fate against vengeance and love. Nikiya, a temple dancer, and Solor, a noble warrior, have sworn eternal fidelity, but powerful figures intervene. The ballet is choreographed by Natalia Makarova after Marius Petipa’s masterful 1887 precedent, and performed by the critically acclaimed Tokyo Ballet. The performance can be watched on October 11 and 12, 2018.
Opera on Ice
The truly amazing show, Opera on Ice, combines the inspirational artistry of operatic singing with the virtuosic talent and grace of world class skating. Olympic gold medalist ice dancers Meryl Davis and Charlie White and the remarkable Australian baritone, Markus Werba, perform in this star-studded magical winter extravaganza that can be enjoyed on December 20 and 21, 2018.
Namaste India
The exotic colours and boundless joy of “Incredible India” portrayed in this stunning cultural tour are brought to life with searing energy and the amazing exuberance theatrical coup produced by the very best of Bollywood’s creative talent. The performance can be watched on October 4 and 5, 2018.
Wael Kfoury
The incredible charismatic Lebanese singer-songwriter and musician, Wael Kfoury, first became famous for singing Min Habibi Ana. His compositions combine tarab with youth song, as in Bahebak Ana Kteer and Sa’alouni. Kfoury’s latest album Ghdartini features some of his greatest hits. He will be performing at ROHM on October 18, 2018.
Nawal El Kuwaitia
Kuwaiti singer and music icon, Nawal El Kuwaitia, renowned as Qitharat Al Khaleej or “Harp of Khaliji Song”, is also accomplished on the piano, oud and flute. She sings to enthusiastic audiences in the Arabian Gulf, as well as in a range of countries abroad. She will be performing on January 25, 2019, at ROHM.
BambinO
For infants aged six to eighteen months, BambinO is a pioneering immersive and musically tactile programme produced by the Scottish Opera, in collaboration with Manchester International Festival and Improbable, to introduce infants to the magic of opera. Participation per show is limited to 60: 30 infants, each accompanied by one adult, and will be performed from March 31 to
April 6, 2019.
Pagagnini
In a highly entertaining family concert, classical music is made more accessible to new-generation audiences with clever comedy. Alongside the music of Pagagnini, the most celebrated violin virtuoso of the early 19th century, expert musicians have fun with hallowed classics and add a little pop, rock and folk on April 6, 2019.
Mahler’s Third Symphony
Gustav Mahler’s celebrated Third Symphony with the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Emmanuel Villaume. This represents a milestone, as it will be the first time that a Mahler symphony is being performed in Oman. Mahler was one of the leading composers of his generation in the late romantic period. His Third Symphony was voted the 10th greatest of all time in a BBC Music Magazine Survey. You can enjoy the symphonic concert on April 4, 2019.
