Excavations at Al-Khatam site in Ibri complete

Muscat: The Ministry of Heritage and Culture has ended the third phase of excavation work at the Al-Khatam Archaeological Tower in Ibri, with the help of experts from the University of Bologna in Italy.
The tower has 14 rooms accessed through a central corridor located in the middle of the well. Excavations revealed that the tower had items from three periods during the third millennium and the second millennium BC.
“Some of the items found at the site include a bronze Khanjar and a number of decorated stone vessels, as well as a white limestone rock carved with an animal image, probably a deer or a cow. It is likely that this rock was reused from a tomb of Um al Nar (circa 2600-2200 BC),” the report stated.
The Ministry of Heritage and Culture is implementing a number of rehabilitation and documentation programmes at the site, as well as working on solutions to many other outstanding issues there, in compliance with UNESCO guidelines.
