Warning over tampering with Omani clothing designs

Muscat: Oman’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry has warned store owners about clothing designs that deviate from officially registered traditional Omani designs on caps, headwraps and dishdashas.

This comes after some of these establishments were found to be importing and selling items which were offensive and breached official rules for traditional clothing.

Some establishments were also found to be selling products which had images and slogans considered offensive or against common moral practices, costumes and the public order.

“Any cutting or sewing, or printing of slogans and trademarks, or by making drawings contrary to the public interest is not allowed, ” the ministry warned, in a statement.

This includes shops which sell and repair clothes, and is part of wider efforts by the ministry to preserve customs and the traditional Omani attire.

The Department of Commercial Affairs at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said that Omani traditional dress is an important symbol of Omani heritage.

Previously, the ministry had already warned commercial institutions and companies to stop abuses which harm some Omani traditional clothing and fashion.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry issued the warning after it found that some commercial establishments were violating the Ministerial Decision No. 270/2015 which has banned the import of some products.

The Ministry said that it was continuing its inspection drive in sewing shops in various governorates of the Sultanate. As a result, the Ministry has deployed a team of inspectors who work under directorates and departments in various governorates of the country.

The team has urged everyone to abide by the rules and regulations as well as protect the Omani attire in its original form and not to purchase or sell any products which are in violation of this decision.
