How to fight the blues

We’ve all fallen prey to the blues at some point. It hits without warning and leaves us grumpy, bored and downright miserable. Though it is just a phase, and eventually fizzles out, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared so we can tackle it right the next time it decides to set in

Play your favourite upbeat tracks – Music can have quite an effect on moods. If you feel the blues kicking in, put on some good music and don’t hesitate to turn up the volume. Just make sure they aren’t some gloomy numbers – we can’t emphasise enough the importance of ‘upbeat’. Having a playlist made beforehand really helps.

Call a friend – Even if your best friend isn’t available, simply talking to someone you like really helps. Keep the topics neutral, talk about pleasant things, and recollect good times.

Take to humour – If movies seem too long a deal for you, resort to a quick light-hearted sitcom or some standup comedy. Sometimes all you need is a good laugh to ease the blues. It’s a good idea to have a list of things which are watch-worthy because let’s face it, finding something interesting when you’re already feeling blue isn’t easy.
Indulge in something fancy – You have all the right to pamper yourself (and that’s not just when you’re feeling blue). Go out for a fancy dinner, head to a nice spa or indulge in some retail therapy.

Exercise – Yes, for some of us, getting to a gym even on a good day can be a challenge. We totally understand the struggle. If you can’t get yourself to the gym, go for a run, or a jog, or take your dog for a walk. Dancing is also a great way to burn some calories and get moving.

Don’t fight it – Like we said, it is just a phase, and it is not going to last forever. Acknowledge its presence but don’t make a big deal about it. Simply make a joke about it and shrug it off. In other words, don’t give it all your energy.

Recognise downtime – Some people feel low at a certain point of the day. Keeping yourself busy during those hours will ensure that the phase passes quicker.
