Ex-Pak PM Nawaz Sharif surrenders to authorities

Karachi: Pakistan's former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif surrounded to authorities in Lahore his bail in a corruption case expired, local media reported.

The three-time premier, along with his daughter and political heir Maryam Nawaz, led a rally from his residence to the Kot Lakhpat jail.

Supporters through rose petals, chanted slogans, and waved the flag of Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN).

Sharif was sentenced to 17 years in jail in two corruption cases, was granted bail for six weeks by Pakistan's Supreme Court after a medical board suggested he shift to a hospital for immediate cardiac treatment. He denies the charges, claiming they are politically motivated.

In a video shared with his supporters, Sharif said, "I am extremely grateful to my party workers and thank them and the lively Lahorites from the bottom of my heart today. It is almost midnight and my people are here walking by my side on the first day of Ramadan. I have no words to thank them for the enthusiasm they have shown today.

"I believe that their enthusiasm and prayers will be accepted very soon and the struggle will end as well. I have no doubt that with the help of their prayers, I will be released from the jail as they know very well for what I am being punished."
