Asiad: Oman targets participation in ten sports

Muscat: Though the final decision is pending, Oman is aiming to field teams and athletes in ten disciplines in the 2018 Asian Games to be organised in Indonesia.
According to a statement issued by the Oman Olympic Committee (OOC), the OOC’s Planning and Follow-up Committee made their initial recommendation of targeting participation in 10 sports at the Asiad after a meeting held on Wednesday.
The committee met under the chairmanship of Sheikh Saif bin Hilal Al Hosni, OOC Vice-Chairman and Chairman of Planning and Follow-up Committee.
For the first time in the history, Asian Games will be held in two cities - Indonesian capital of Jakarta and Palembang, the capital of South Sumatra province and will take place from August 18 to September 2, 2018.
As per OOC Planning and Follow-up Committee’s initial recommendations, the ten sports in which the Sultanate is planning to take part are athletics, swimming, shooting, football, beach volleyball, tennis, sailing, hockey, weightlifting and paragliding.
But a final decision on number of teams and athletes to take part in the Asian Games will be taken during a OOC board meeting on July 1, 2018.
During Wednesday’s meeting, the Planning and Follow-up Committee also discussed Oman’s participation in 3rd Youth Olympic Games to be held in Argentina’s capital city of Buenos Aires.
The committee recommended Oman’s participation in three sports - athletics, swimming and sailing - subject to the respective teams’ qualification for the Youth Olympic Games.
