Clean your makeup brushes and sponges

Whether as a makeup addict or as an occasional enthusiast, most of us have more than a few makeup brushes and sponges lying around. But before you start putting them to your face, here’s what you need to know.

Clean before use – They always say that cleaning your makeup brushes and sponges once or twice a week is good enough. But think about those brushes that you leave for display in those open jars; they’re bound to have dust from the air settle on them. Do you want to put that to your face? Definitely not! Hence it’s always a good idea to use a gentle and quick cleanser before your routine. Bet they never told you that!

The weekly wash – Sponges and brushes tend to accumulate bacteria, oil, and grime (even if you don’t particularly suffer from oily skin). Make it a point to deep clean your brushes and sponges. Lukewarm water, baby shampoo, and specially designed brush cleansing gloves will be your best friend.

Watch out for expiry – The sponges you get in bulk are mostly not reusable, which means you should toss them out after you use it. Other products like beauty blenders usually last for a few months. But remember, just like makeup, brushes and sponges also have a life. If you see them fraying, losing shape or just getting harsh on your skin, it’s time to get new ones.

Keep an eye for moulds – Many of us make the horrible mistake of not letting sponges dry completely. The result is quite disgusting – it gives rise to moulds. If you suspect that your sponges weren’t dried well, slice it through the middle to check for moulds. Don’t worry, you can always use the two pieces separately if it is clear.

Soften them up – If you thought conditioners were only for your hair, well, think again. You can also use conditioners after your deep cleansing session to get that softness back in your makeup applicators. Simply take a dollop of conditioner in your hand and condition them with it.
