Khartoum: The head of Sudan's transitional military council Lt-Gen Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan confirmed that millions of dollars in multiple currencies had been found at the home of former President Omar al-Bashir.
Speaking on state TV, Burhan said that a team of police seized €7 million euros (around $7.87 million), $350,000 dollars and billions of Sudanese pounds in cash at Bashir's home. The money has been deposited in the Central Bank of Sudan, he added.
Reiterating his stance that the transitional period will end soon, Burhan said, "The military council has no ambitions in power, and we are keen to begin the transitional period as soon as possible."
The council chairman vowed that no Sudanese political entity, except Bashir's National Congress Party, would be excluded during the transitional period.
Protests sparked by price hikes on basic commodities erupted in December and quickly grew into a popular movement against the regime of Bashir. The demonstrations eventually led to Bashir being ousted from power.
Meanwhile, in a move that will provide the country with a boost, the UAE and Saudi Arabia announced that they will provide Sudan with $3 billion in assistance.
The assistance bundle entails $500 million deposit into Sudan's central bank to strengthen the country's liquidity and monetary reserves. The remaining amount will be dedicated to support the people of Sudan, across food, medicines, and fuel derivatives, according to authorities.
