Rugby: Muscat Rugby Football Club launch title defence with stunning victory over UAE Shaheen

Muscat: Reigning Gulf Conference champions Muscat Rugby Football Club (MRFC) launched the new season with a stunning 53-0 victory over UAE Shaheen in Dubai on Friday.
According to a statement issued by the club, the MRFC team dominated in all areas of the game and throughout the game applied the pressure needed to keep one of Muscat’s strongest opponents at bay.
MRFC’s dominance in the set play of the game was evident at every turn, with a particular strength in the forward pack which disrupted UAE Shaheen’s ability to protect their own ball. Thanks to new coaches bringing the team together and making them work closer as a pack, the MRF team showed they are a force to be reckoned with.
All players gave it their all though a particular mention go to Macdara O’Ciardha and Jonathan Young in the forwards, and Gareth Osborne in the backs, all of whom went over and above to seal the victory.
Joey Maniel, team captain for this season, was understandably happy with the result.
“We went to the UAE knowing that Shaheen would give 110 percent and we weren’t disappointed. They gave it their all but by the time the final whistle went Muscat had shown the resolve, commitment and the level of fitness we have trained for. I’m very happy to be defending the championship with such a strong start,” he said.
With the help of funding from MRFC’s main sponsors, Muna Noor, Grand Hyatt, OUA and Hamptons International, MRFC were able to conduct a comprehensive pre-season training programme that paid dividends on the field of play this weekend.
MRFC looks ahead to its next fixture in two weeks’ time against Bahrain and hope to continue their winning ways on their path to defending their Gulf Conference title.
