Oman Chess: OCC promotes chess with Zubair Corporation support

Muscat: With an attempt to further popularise the game, Oman Chess Committee (OCC) under the patronage of The Zubair Corporation (Z-Corp) organised a chess tournament and training camp in Al Dakhiliyah, Al Dhahira and Al Batinah South governorates recently.
Over 30 players participated in the training camp and a tournament was held over three consecutive days in the governorates.
It may be recalled that Z-Corp had recently signed a sponsorship agreement with Oman Chess Committee (OCC) to support the activities of OCC for the next one year to enable it to spread the popularity of the chess.
Z-Corp in cooperation with OCC has already established centres in Sohar, Ibri and Nizwa to popularise the mind sports. The agreement was initiated to signify Z-Corp’s commitment to support the development of sports in the country and encourage young talents.
As a member of the private sector, The Zubair Corporation is keen on supporting the country’s sports development since it believes it is an area of vital importance in the national development process.
The pact between Z-Corp and OCC was facilitated by Oman Olympic Committee as part of their plans to help sports associations and athletes to get the funding of the private sector companies.
Z-Corp believes that support to this training programme will help young Omani children can improve their analytical thinking skills and memory retention. It also wants to support young Omani players who hope to qualify for national and international competitions by participating in such training programmes.
Expressing delight at the success of the programme, Ibrahim Al Salmi, Social Communication Manager at The Zubair Corporation, said: “We are pleased with the response from the participants and players in all the governorates. We are keen on backing OCC’s strive to promote chess. We have noticed that chess has become increasingly popular in Oman. This indicates that our effort to popularise the game has borne fruit.”
Appreciating the Z-Corp for extending their support, Laila bint Ahmed al Najjar, Chairperson of Oman Chess Committee, said: “Support from a respected private organisation like Z-Corp has played a big role in promoting chess in Oman. These training sessions are helping us identify players to represent Oman regionally and globally.”
She added: “We have held several training programmes over the past few months and the have been motivation for students and players to master the game of chess. Young people who dream to qualify for national and international competitions will profit from the kind of trainings and tournaments.”
With an intention to encourage more students to take up the game of chess, The Zubair Corporation (Z-Corp) in association with Oman Chess Committee (OCC) organised a chess training programme for students at the Zubair Automotive Group showroom in Nizwa and Sohar.
Demonstrating its continuous commitment to all kinds of sports, Z-Corp has been a partner and sponsor of different sports activities including football, handball, ice sports, volleyball for many years.
