Construction company in Oman fined for faulty building

Muscat: A company which was found guilty of having built a substandard structure for a client, has been fined after the appearance of abnormal cracks in the building led the customer to approach the Public Authority of Consumer Protection (PACP).

The PACP said that the poorly constructed home posed a danger to the resident. The Court of First Instance in Shinas has convicted the defendant for his lack of commitment to the service provided to the consumer and his failure to provide proper service.

In a statement, the PACP said, "The General Directorate for Consumer Protection in Sahar received a complaint stating that the consumer agreed with an institution to build a house for him but after the completion of construction, cracks appeared in the roof of the house from the inside leading to water leakage."

"After a check of the house was undertaken by an engineering expert, abnormal cracks were found in the roof of all rooms, which is a danger to the residents of the house. The cracks are because of a defect in the cement mixture (concrete mixture)," the PACP added.

Article (2) of the Consumer Protection Law states, "Failure to provide goods at the time of delivery or failure to perform the service agreed upon or not completed on time shall be considered to be contrary to the rules of freedom of choice, equality, fair treatment, safety and credibility.
