More than 2,000 labour law violators held in Oman

Muscat: More than 2,000 expats have been arrested within 19 days by the Ministry of Manpower, for violations of labour laws.
A total of 2,319 individuals were arrested by the joint inspection team involving the Ministry of Manpower, the Royal Oman Police and other agencies, as part of a campaign which took place between March 3 to 21, 2019.
In addition to the arrests, 1,402 expat workers were deported “As a result of violating the provisions of the Labour Law,” during the same period.
The Ministry releases weekly indicators which show the number of expatriate workers who were arrested through a joint operation with other government authorities.
Of the total expats arrested, 950 had left their jobs, 1,080 were freelance workers, and 189 were referred by other agencies.
Muscat, the capital, recorded the highest number of arrests with 1,572 followed by Northern Al Batinah with 222 during the 19 days.
The week that saw the highest number of arrests and deportation was between March 15 and 21. During that week, a total of 1,077 expats were arrested and another 569 deported.
The authorities at the Ministry of Manpower are currently taking the appropriate legal action against the workers.
