Kenyan teacher named world's best, wins $1 million

Muscat: A teacher from a remote village in Kenya has won the $1 million Varkey Global Teacher Prize in Dubai.
Peter Tabichi’s name was announced on stage by Hollywood star Hugh Jackman, beating nine other finalists to win the award.
Tabichi teaches maths and physics at Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School, which is located in the village of Pwani in Kenya’s Rift Valley.
Tabichi, who is also a Franciscan Brother, gives 80 percent of his salary to local projects and has been credited with transforming his local community.
He has worked to teach villagers how to grow famine resistant crops and runs a Peace Club at school to unite seven different ethnic groups to strengthen the community. In 2018, his students beat the country’s top schools in Kenya’s Science and Engineering Fair.
Tabichi said in an emotional speech, “Every day in Africa we turn a new page and a new chapter. Today is another day. This prize does not recognise me but recognises this great continent’s young people."
In a statement, Kenyan President called him a "shining example of what the human spirit can achieve not just for Kenya, not just for Africa, but for the world."
"Peter, you chose to teach in a remote part of Kenya, Kiriko Mixed Secondary School, and you chose to transform lives," he added. "You give me faith that Africa's best days are ahead of us and your story will light the way for all future generations."
