Football: Former star Badr Al Maimani named Oman U-23 team’s assistant coach

Muscat: The Oman Football Association (OFA) board has named former star player Badr Al Maimani as the assistant coach of Oman under-23 football team.
According to a statement issued by the OFA on Monday, Badr Al Maimani will be assistant to team’s head coach Hamad Al Azzani.
“The decision to appoint Badr Al Maimani as assistant coach of Olympic (U23) team comes within the association’s strategy of utilising the services of talented Omani nationals,” the OFA statement said.
Badr Al Maimani, who played a vital role in Oman’s maiden and only Gulf Cup triumph in 2009, has been, and still is, a very popular football star.
He brings with him rich experience after having played for the national team for a long time. At club level, he represented Al Musanna Club, Muscat Club, Riyadh Club of Saudi Arabia, Al Ahli of Qatar, Al Ittifaq Club of Saudi Arabia.
After his playing days, he worked as an assistant coach with Fanja Club and he also served as the assistant to the director of the first national team.
Competitions panel meets
Meanwhile, OFA’s Competitions Committee held their first meeting of the year under the chairmanship of Mohsin bin Hamad Al Masroori on Monday.
The meeting discussed a number of issues on the agenda including the remaining activities of the 2016-2017 season.
The meeting also discussed the commencement of the second phase of Omantel Professionals League, the qualifying matches of the age group leagues and took the appropriate decisions with their regard.
