One ingredient five ways: Molasses

This thick, dark, and sticky syrup is flavourful and an ideal substitute of sugar. It is slightly less sweeter than sugar and goes well with baked beans, cakes, bread, pies, and pudding.

Molasses Sweet Potato Pie
Take 1 cup cooked mashed sweet potatoes, 1/4 cup butter, 1/2 cup dark brown sugar, 1/2tsp salt, 1/3 cup milk, 3 eggs, beaten, 1/2 cup light molasses, 2tsp vanilla, little butter, and 2tsp sugar. Add potatoes and eggs, and mix well. Add molasses, milk, vanilla, and salt. Stir to blend. Pour into unbaked pie shell and bake at 425 degrees for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350° C and bake for 35 to 45 minutes more, until it is brown.

Molasses Cookies
Take 1/2 cup sugar, 1/3 cup shortening, 1 egg, 1/2 cup molasses, 1tsp baking soda dissolved in 5tbsp of boiling water, 2 cups flour, 1tsp cinnamon, 1tsp cloves, and 3/4 cup raisins frosting. Blend sugar and shortening. Add eggs and molasses and mix. Dissolve baking soda in boiling water and mix. Add flour, cinnamon, cloves, and raisins. Mix well. Bake at 200° C for approximately 7 minutes. Frost while warm.

Molasses Bread Pudding
Take 10 slices stale bread, cubed, 2 eggs, 3tbsp molasses, 2tbsp sugar, 1/4tsp salt, 2 cups milk, 2tbsp butter, melted. Arrange bread cubes in well greased baking dish. Beat together eggs, molasses, sugar, and salt. Add milk and butter. Pour over bread cubes. Bake in moderate oven at 230° C for 1 hour or until firm. Serve cold with milk or cream.

Banana Molasses Cake
Take 3 1/4 cup flour, 4tsp baking powder, 1tsp soda, 1tsp cinnamon, 3/4 cup butter, 1/3 cup molasses, 3 eggs, 1 cup mashed banana, 1 cup chopped nuts, and 2 cups sugar. Combine dry ingredients. In another bowl cream butter and sugar and add molasses. Beat until combined. Thoroughly beat in eggs and fold in nuts. Then stir in flour mixture and bananas in four additions. Pour into greased and floured pan. Bake in 220° C for an hour. Let cool for 10 minutes and then remove from pan. Drizzle with vanilla glaze.

Molasses Baked Beans
Take 500g dried pea beans, 1 1/2 cups water, 2 green bell peppers, coarsely chopped, 1 large onion, chopped, 2 cloves garlic, minced, 1/2 cup molasses or honey, 1/2 cup chilli sauce, 1/3 cup dark brown sugar, 1/2tsp salt, 1/2tsp dry mustard, 1/2tsp black pepper, 1/4tsp ginger. Wash and soak beans overnight and drain well. Place drained beans in a pan and cover beans with water and simmer for 1 hour over low heat, skimming off any foam. Turn beans into a bean pot or a 8x10-inch baking pan and add remaining ingredients. Bake beans for almost one-and-a-half hours in a preheated oven at 220° C or until beans are soft. After the first hour, stir occasionally. If beans seem dry, stir in a little water. [email protected]
