Oman Culture: Classic to begin the new season at ROHM

What better way to open the new 2016-17 Season at the Royal Opera House than with the world’s greatest love story in song — the opera, Roméo and Juliette. The young soprano known as ‘The Angelina Jolie of Opera’, Nino Machaidze, stars as Juliet. She sings one of the best-loved arias in all of opera — the compellingly beautiful Je veux vivre! (I want to live!).
The brilliant young tenor, Jean-Francois Borras sings Roméo with Nino’s Juliette in four stunning love duets that characterise this sumptuous opera and its inspiring music. September 29 and 30, October 1, 2016, at 7pm.
A wildly popular star, the phenomenal young Palestinian singer who famously came from nowhere to win the 2013 Arab Idol contest, Mohammad Assaf appears in two different shows in early October. First he is a special guest artist at the ROHM Omani Women’s Day celebrations on October 6, 2016 at 7pm; and then, on October 8, again at 7pm, Assaf will sing in an exciting solo concert. This is an evening for everyone, as Assaf combines the best classical traditions of Arab and Western music in irresistible melodies and soaring song. The amazing talent of Mohammad Assaf and the deep sincerity that rings out in his voice makes for a moving and unforgettable experience.
And romance returns to the ROHM on October 20 and 22 at 7pm with Richard Wagner’s legendary and stunningly dramatic opera relating the story of a chivalrous knight mysteriously known as Lohengrin. The knight comes in a swan-drawn boat to rescue Elsa of Brabant, a noble lady in distress, from an evil pretender to her family’s dukedom. There is one condition. Elsa must never ask the knight’s name and his origin. The knight and Elsa marry; but, do they live happily ever after? An unpredictable ending makes this medieval tale of romance all the more thrilling.
An added bonus is a free presentation at 4pm on October 26 on the secrets of ROHM’s technologies and staging mechanisms, including a demonstration of the amazing operations that transform the auditorium from a Concert Hall for music into a theatre for opera. It’s an engineering marvel that seems like magic.
