Muscat: Eight students from the Indian School Al Ghubra recently participated in the Global Young Leadership Conference held in New York and Washington, United States.
The students, Achintya Jayakumar, Durva Mahale, Dipesh Haldar, Charlette Thankam, Amartya Jagadish Naik, Adarsh Varghese, Aditya Deepak and Arvindakshan Rajesh participated in a variety of lectures, group discussions, site visits and recreational activities in the 10-day conference that was held from June 13 to 22.
Each delegate was assigned one of the six country groups for the conference. The country groups worked collaboratively towards the final “Global Summit” simulation, an event that replicates a United Nations meeting, where countries try to solve pressing issues and reach resolutions.
The delegates debated on issues ranging from poverty to the economy and the military, an experience of a lifetime.
The keynote speeches delivered by various students were related to the fields of education, sports, medicine and filmmaking and were immensely rewarding.
The delegates also discovered the value of other cultures and made friends from various countries as there were more than 150 students from 70 countries all over the globe. They visited the embassies of foreign countries in the United States to understand how the diplomatic process works.
They also took the opportunity to explore the streets of New York and experience some remarkable places, including the Empire State Building, Wall Street, the Lincoln Memorial, the White House and the US Department of State and saw Matilda the Musical.
A visit to the National Air and Space Museum and the US Holocaust Memorial in Washington was inspirational for the delegates. In addition, they were fortunate to attend to a lecture by Angelica Silvero, a spokesman for the World Bank on the international currency scenario.
A cultural evening, where each of them spoke about his/her country and exchanged gifts, was also held. The conference helped them build confidence and develop leadership skills that will be invaluable for their future at universities and beyond.
It’s indeed a very rare honour and privilege that the delegates had received a personal invitation to attend the Presidential Inauguration Leadership Summit.
A great opportunity for them to listen to the Inaugural Speech of the 58th US President and attend a three-day conference at the UN Security Council from January 18 to 22, 2017. ISG takes great pride in the achievement of these meritorious students.
