Child beggars arrested in Oman during Ramadan

Muscat: While it being a month of worship, giving and compassion, beggars take advantage of the holy month of Ramadan to make a quick buck but unfortunately face arrests instead.
330 beggars were arrested, where 180 were males and 150 were females, in 1222 operations conducted by the anti-beggar combating team from the Ministry of Social Development during June 2016 in Muscat, Dhofar, North and South Al Batinah and Buraimi Governorates.
84 were Omani nationals (55 males, 29 females) and 246 were expatriates (125 males, 121 females).
31 beggars were under the age of 12 with 15 of them being boys and 16 girls, while those aged between 12 and 18 made up a total of 19 (7 males, 12 females).
Those aged between 18 and 40 years old were the majority age group caught begging with 61 males and 67 females arrested while the second largest age group were aged between 40 and 60 (64 males, 38 females) followed by beggars over the age of 60 which consisted of 34 males and 16 females.
213 beggars were arrested in Muscat alone, followed by 79 in North and South Al Batinah. Buraimi recorded 28 arrests followed by Asharqiyah with 4 beggars and Dhofar with 3. A’Dakhiliya and Al Dhahira Governorates had 2 and 1 beggars arrested respectively.
