Oman weather: Heavy rain falls in many parts of Sultanate

Muscat: Parts of the Sultanate witnessed heavy to moderate rains on Sunday, causing some Wadis to overflow their banks.
“Heavy rain fell in the wilayat of Dama Wal Taeein, North Sharqiyah Governorate, Al Buraimi Samail, Ibri, and Dhank,” said Bader Ali Al Baddaei, an administrator at www.rthmc.net, a local Web-based weather forum in Oman, quoting residents.
According to Al Baddaei, Wadi Al Ghoubrah in Al Buraimi and Dhank are overflowing following heavy rains, which began on Sunday afternoon.
“Rain began to fall at 1.30pm, and the wadis started to overflow soon after,” residents said.
“It was too windy and some electric poles were damaged,” a resident in Ibri reported.
The Oman Meteorology department has issued advisory notices to residents of Fahud, Bidiya and Al Mazyunh, warning that there is a chance that sandstorms might strike these areas.
Further, an alert has been issued because of possible high waves in the Sea of Oman on the coast of the Musandam.
The alert is in effect from yesterday and will continue for the next three days. Waves might reach a maximum height of 3 metres.
The weather forecast for Monday says skies will be cloudy over the coastal areas of Dhofar Governorate and adjoining mountains.
It also predicts intermittent showers and fog in the Dhofar region. The Oman Meteorology department also reports that there is a chance for convective cloud development, with isolated rain and occasional thundershowers over Al Hajar Mountains and the adjacent wilayats.
According to a senior meteorologist at Accuweather.com, there will be little rain in Oman in the coming days.
