Muscat:No wonder the Markaz Al Bahja Open Chess Tournament held at end of November attracted one of the largest contingent of chess players before winter vacation. However it was not of the children's group that was the biggest but the seniors who added up to 25 best players in Oman. And the latest to clinch the coveted prize in the open category was Navid Chaichi of WoodGroup-CCC but not before overcoming stiff challenge from equally determined rivals.

In fact, at the end of intensely contested games, Navid finished with 3.5 points, same as Dyane Rowe but the former took the top honours thanks to his better BH of 11.5 against the latter's 8.5.Tomy Joseph finished third with 3.0 points, same as Theodore Terence Yu. Even the Buchholz (BH) system failed to separate the players as both garnered 9 points forcing the organisers to apply refined Buchholz (rBH) method after which Tomy was declared as 3rd with 35 points.

Under 14 – Tejas S  took the 1st place with 3.5 points.  Sawad Shamsudheen and Shyam Senthil collected 3 points each but Sawad taking the 2nd place on better tie breaking based on BH method.Under 12 —  Dushyanth M. K. took his almost reserved 1st place followed by Abhinav Siddharth and Pandyan settled with 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Under 10 — Mezban Anwar had no real threat to his reign in under-10 as he went on to retain the title with an unbeaten record that fetched him four points. Moomena Shamsudheen with 3.0 point and Pradyumna Shetty with 2.0 settled with 2nd and 3rd place respectively.Under-8 This category had an exciting and a very sporting play off for the first place as Jijo Joy and Hari Chandan agreed to go through with it when offered by the orbiter rather than to go by Buchholz tie-breaking method.

Playing white Jijo Joy won it comfortably and the 3rd position was taken by Dhruvan G. The next edition of the Markaz Al Bahja chess tournament will take place on January 25 for all categories and registration starts at 2pm.
