Colombo:A boat crash in the Maldives left one Finnish tourist dead and nine others wounded near a resort in the upmarket Indian Ocean archipelago, police said on Monday.
One boat carrying five tourists hit a public transport vessel on Sunday night a short distance from the Bandos island resort, near the capital Male and the airport island of Hulhule, police spokesman Hassan Haneef told AFP.
"The tourist boat crashed with a public transport speedboat and we are investigating the incident," Haneef told AFP by telephone. "The tourist was dead on admission to hospital."
He identified the victim as Juha Thapani Perttila.
Another of the tourists, whose nationalities have not yet been announced, was injured.
Eight local people, four men and four women, were injured on the public transport boat, which was carrying 19 passengers and three crew.
All of the injured are now out of danger, Haneef added.
Perttila and the other tourists were heading to the Bandos resort to begin a holiday in the archipelago, which is known for its luxury hotels, turquoise blue water, shallow lagoons and white sandy beaches.
Haneef said boat accidents were rare in the Maldives, a favourite destination for celebrities and honeymooners, and police have begun an investigation.
