Muscat: This year has been quite fruitful for the Omani-Korean relations, Korean ambassador to Oman, Jonghyun Choe, has said. He was speaking at the Korean National Day reception held recently.

The guest of honour at the event was Mohsin bin Khamis Al Balushi, Advisor, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and Sayyid Mohammed bin Salim Al Said, Chief of Protocol, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Speaking on the occasion, the ambassador said, "This year is another fruitful year in the Omani-Korean relations.  In January, the Korean prime minister made an official visit to the Sultanate and discussed with His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said and His Highness Deputy Prime Minister for the Council of Ministers Sayyid Fahd bin Mahmoud Al Said ways to further strengthen our cooperation.

"In spring, we were honoured by the Omani government's active participation in the Yeosu Expo held in Korea between May and August.  The Omani pavilion won the gold prize for theme development. And in June, for the first time, Sultan Qaboos University sent some of its students to the Republic of Korea. The university sends top students to foreign countries during summer vacation. And last month, the third meeting of the Oman-Korea Joint Committee for Economic Cooperation was held in Seoul."

Referring to the new chancery of Oman's embassy in Seoul, he said, "The beautiful Omani-style building has become a landmark in the downtown Seoul."

He added: "This year marks the 50th anniversary of the First Five-Year Economic Plan of Korea. In 1962, South Korea was a poor and underdeveloped country but in the last 50 years we have become a very different country just as Oman has been transformed immensely under His Majesty's guidance. Taking this opportunity, I would like to express our gratitude to all of you for your encouragement and support for Korea."
