Muscat: The BSc (Honours) Chemistry degree programme offered by the Department of Chemistry at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) received full academic accreditation from the Canadian Society for Chemistry in the first cycle from 2014 to 2019.
The Canadian Society for Chemistry had earlier sent an accreditation committee to visit SQU and review the quality of the programme and the facilities at the department.
Following the visit of the committee, full academic accreditation was granted to the programme.
The department evaluates its programmes periodically through external experts in order to verify the quality of its academic programmes. In addition, the department makes a periodic review of these programmes every five years.
Dr Haider Al Lawati, associate professor, department of chemistry, College of Science, said, "the academic accreditation granted by the Canadian Society for Chemistry, an internationally reputed accreditation organisation, reveals the high standard of the degree programme in chemistry. It also testifies to the proficiency of the academic and technical staff at the department, and the standard of the well-equipped laboratories and other facilities at the department. Academic accreditation is a supportive tool which helps us maintain the level and quality of our programmes," he said.
SQU graduates from the programme will receive a formal accreditation certificate from the Canadian Society for Chemistry upon the department sending the list of graduates each year to the organisation.
This will help the students to have more acceptability in reputed higher educational and research institutions around the world and will also enhance their career prospects.
