Muscat: On The Rocks, a new restaurant in Seeb catering to people who want five-star food without paying five-star prices held its grand opening on Monday night.
Located in the Golden Tulip Hotel, On The Rocks serves contemporary European and Asian cuisine in a modern, cubism inspired atmosphere.
The restaurant had its soft opening at the end of May and the chef's brigade and management has spent the summer tweaking the menu to ensure only the finest food is served.
"Our philosophy is to create a high-end food and beverage option and our menu is tailored to the likes and dislikes of our discerning guests," said Kishore Singh, spokesperson for Hussain Fadhil and Partners, which owns the restaurant.
Head Chef Arun Vats brings with him 14 years of experience in some of the top restaurants in New Delhi, where he worked in five-star restaurants at the Taj, Oberoi and Westin hotels.
Vats says he believes in using as many local ingredients as possible, so he tries to use local vegetables, poultry and seafood. He describes his menu as progressive, international cuisine with local influences.
"Basically it's modern European, but I've incorporated Middle Eastern flavours in each part of the menu. We've been planning and working out the menu for a long time and I'm sure our customers are going to like it," he explained.
The restaurant has seating for 160 people and is open for lunch and dinner. The restaurant, which offers a full-service dinner menu until 11pm, also has a finger-food menu from 11pm to 1am.
Guests can watch the chefs at work making a range of appetizers, pizzas, handmade pastas, mains and tantalising desserts, like tiramisu or homemade basil and olive oil ice cream, through a large window that offers a panoramic of the kitchen.
"The modus operandi behind the live kitchen is to show how confident we are in what we serve," Kishore said.
He explained that the restaurant aims to be on par with the five-star hotels in Muscat in terms of quality, but with prices that are noticeably lower, especially for beverages. A typical dinner for two people with soft drinks would be OMR18 to OMR24, he added.
On The Rocks is open between 12pm and 3pm for lunch, 7pm to 11pm dinner from and after hours from 11pm to 1am. On The Rocks is also ideal for private events, meetings, and product launches, Kishore noted.
