Salalah: Various recommendations, including the overseeing of law enforcement agencies and ensuring the right of the accused to a fair trial, were made at the concluding day of the Fair Trial Safeguards conference on Thursday.

The conference also recommended a more active role for the Omani Lawyers Association in terms of safeguarding the rights of accused persons and the litigants.

The meet concluded at Hilton Salalah Hotel in Salalah on Thursday under the auspices of Sheikh Salim bin Oufit Al Shanfari, Chairman of Dhofar Municipality.

The two-day conference was organised by the Omani Lawyers Association (OLA), in co-operation with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

A number of judges, public prosecutors, lawyers and jurists from all legal areas and disciplines, including the State Council, Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), NHRC, the Royal Oman Police (ROP), Public Prosecution and the judiciary apparatus attended the conference.

It also recommended the training and rehabilitation of judicial police personnel and staff, as well as organising conferences and seminars to improve the status of judicial facilities and rights of community members.

The conference aimed at creating awareness on fair trial and its application in the community, in addition to designing a plan to develop mechanisms for arrests, detentions and interrogations to guarantee the rights of the accused.
