Muscat: The Royal Opera House Muscat (ROHM) is looking for young men who have a passion or a curiosity for the stage to audition for walk-on roles in the upcoming production of Verdi's opera Macbeth.
Based on Shakespeare's play, Macbeth is the story of a Scottish knight whose aspirations of becoming a king lead to his bloody downfall. The opera company Teatro Verdi, from Trieste, Italy, will need 10 men who are approximately 20 to 25-years-old and 170 to 180 cm tall to play the part of soldiers, and one boy of about 12 years of age to play the son of one of the main characters.
Supers or extras, as those playing the silent walk-on roles are called, must be available between September 10 to 16 for costume fittings and rehearsals, and on the evenings of September 18, 20 and 22 for the performances.
Christina Scheppelmann, Director General of the ROHM, says the opportunity will be both fun and fascinating, especially for people interested in music and theatre.
They will have a chance to see how the production comes together, from the costumes and makeup to set development to singing and music.
"You get a look backstage. You can be onstage and in costume. You can have a view from the stage into the auditorium, which the audience usually never gets to see. It's interesting, it's fun and you get to be part of the show," she explained.
The supers may have small parts but they are still very important for the final production, Scheppelmann noted.
"There's no show that can happen without every single little piece. Just because you're a super doesn't mean you're less important. You may have a little less to do but without you as a super, the show can't happen," she added.
During the 2013-2014 ROHM season, there were supers in both an opera and a ballet. Scheppelmann said it required a bit of a time commitment from the supers, but the participants found the experiences very worthwhile.
Both Omanis and residents of Oman can apply for a part by sending their details including age, height, clothing size and a little bit about why they are interested in being cast in Macbeth, to email@example.com by August 21.
