Muscat: Percy Pereira and Noel Halister successfully defended their respective titles at the Bank Muscat-sponsored annual badminton tournament organised by the Indian Social Club (ISC) Muscat, the former retaining the veterans singles title and the latter the boys under-18 crown.
In a repeat of last year's final, Percy dominated the veterans final and defeated K. Philip Joseph with a convincing 21-10, 21-11 margin. Percy came under pressure in the second game when Philip Joseph raced to a 9-3 lead before the top seed fought back to win the game and lift the veterans title.
Percy will take on Shabaz Nassar in the final of the men's A singles this evening. Percy advanced to the summit clash when his opponent in the semifinal, Kurian Mathew withdrew due to injury but his opponent for the title, Shabaz Nassar earned his place in the title clash after a brilliant display outplaying Shreyas Srinagesh 21-5, 21-17.
In the boys final, Noel, the top seed played with poise and confidence as he battled the under-15 champ Himesh Haridas, who was oozing with confidence after his brilliant upset victory over the second seed in the semifinal.
Although Noel won in straight games 21-15, 21-15, Himesh kept him on his toes and brought the best out of the top seed.
Noel maintained the upperhand in both games and in spite of taking a 5-0 lead in the second game, Himesh rallied to level at nine-all.
The two exchanged some brilliant rallies as Himesh kept in hot pursuit until 14-all when Noel took his chances and raced ahead to win the title.
