Muscat: Campaigning for the elections to Pakistan School Muscat's (PSM) Board of Directors has reached a feverish pitch with as many as 19 candidates vying for the six seats reserved for elected members.
Other Pakistani school branches in Salalah, Sohar and Musannah will also be going to polls to elect their School Management Committees.
Scheduled for May 29, the PSM election, held every two years, has generated immense interest. Three major panels are in the fray, namely those led by incumbent Chairman Javed Iqbal Chaudhry, Shabbir Ahmed Nadeem and Adnan Shehzad.
All the three panels have been approaching parents to garner support with Javed's panel urging parents to "vote for qualified and experienced professionals for the continuity of academic excellence".
The panel led by Adnan Shehzad comprises first-timers promising change in the Pakistani schools' fortune. "This is your chance to vote for the change," is their message to the voters.
The third panel, led by former BoD chairman Shabbir Nadeem, is targeting reforms and academic excellence if voted to power.
With all the leading panels promising improvement in the school's governance, this year's election is expected to see the highest voter turnout.
The elections for management of Pakistan School Muscat and its branches in Oman for the next two years are being held under the supervision of Ministry of Education upon completion of session 2012-2014.
Former chairman Muhammad Zia ul Haq Siddiqui has been appointed Election Commissioner while former PSM principal Prof. Irshad Ahmed will be the Returning Officer.
The ministry has nominated returning officers for each polling station.
According to the rules for election, only one of the parents, mother or father, will be allowed to vote. Male parents must show their resident cards while female parents have to show their passport and CNIC card.
PS Muscat: The Board of Directors for PSM has six elected members from among the parents, for which 19 candidates are contesting. The total number of voters is approximately 1,250. Election will be held in PSM main campus, Ruwi on Thursday, May 29 from 7.30am to 6.30pm without any break.

Polling will take place continuously from 7.30am to 4.30pm on Sunday, May 25 at the campuses of respective schools. At both the places, there are six candidates each contesting for three seats at each of the SMCs.
PS Nizwa: Since there are only three candidates for School Management Committee at the Nizwa branch against three seats, so no polling is being held at Nizwa school.
"Results will be announced after counting of votes at the end of specified timings in the presence of the candidates or their nominated representatives for onward submission to the Ministry of Education for final notification," said a PSM official.
"A code of conduct draft, mutually agreed, has been given to all the candidates for strict compliance as per previous years' practice," he added.
