Muscat: The Filcosoc-FMB All-Filipino basketball tournament 'The Chairman's Cup', named after Filcosoc Chairman Rodrigo Desiatco, entered the quarterfinals after sister teams OUA/Kwikform Tigers and Mitsubishi Motors won over separate opponents in the wild card games played last Friday.
In the first game, OUA/Kwikform Tigers got the better of the depleted but fighting crew of the FPI Pampanga Dragons for a 84-76 win. The game was a nip-and-tuck affair in the first three quarters but as Dragons lost steam in the fourth quarter, the Tigers capitalised on its height and heft advantage as they closed the last quarter pulling away.
Steady plays from big man Alwin Espiritu with support from Torio, Olmo and Barroba carried the OUA/Kwikform Tigers to the quarterfinals.
The Tigers now face the fourth placed CCC/UGPM in another knockout quarterfinal game on May 16.
In the second game, Mitsubishi Motors stamped their class on the fighting Tropang Tambayan winning 98-80. The height and heft advantage of Mitsubishi Motors was just too much for the run-and-gun game of the Tropang Tambayan.
With Anthony Espiritu, Timario, Catolos, Duay and Viado taking care of the scoring and rebounding chores for Mitsubishi Motors, Tropang Tambayan coach Ariel Nolasco had the difficult task of trying to neutralise his team's height disadvantage with their run-and-gun game. Even the presence of the brilliant backcourt combination of Inihao and Caradja could not carry Tropang Tambayan to the next round.
Tropa's Guinita, Abellonosa and Santos tried vainly to provide support to the league's premier backcourt tandem but this was not enough as Mitsubishi Motors won with plenty to spare.
Mitsubishi Motors now test the mettle of third placed Times of Oman/Badr Al Samaa/Mars Hypermarket team in the other knockout quarterfinals in the second game of Friday's
The winner in the OUA/Kwikform Tigers and CCC UGPM tussle face first placed Asia Express/Muscat Heat with the latter enjoying a twice-to-beat advantage while the victor in the Times of Oman/Badr Al Sama'a/Mars Hypermarket and Mitsubishi Motors encounter battle second placed Alpha Eagles, also enjoying a twice-to-beat advantage in the semifinal round.
The tournament, which has Asia Express as its main sponsor with MHD – BYD as the secondary sponsor, is being played at the Oman Sports Club basketball court and organised by Filcosoc and managed by the Filipino Muscat Ballers (FMB).
