Muscat: An Indian blue-collar worker was killed and 18 others, all belonging to a construction company in Ghala, were injured when the bus they were travelling in met with an accident early morning on Wednesday.

According to the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulances (PACDA), the accident took place while the bus was on its way to a project site in north Mabella from Rumais near Barka.

According to a post published by the PACDA on its official twitter account a few minutes after the accident, "one worker was killed, 18 (were) injured and one was (in) a critical (state)."

Though social networking sites were abuzz with many casualties and there were unconfirmed reports of three deaths, a source in the company said that they were aware about only one death.

The incident
"It happened when he tried to jump through the window just as the bus met with the accident," the company source added.

The injured were rushed to two government hospitals in Muscat.

"A few of the injured left the hospital after receiving treatment while some are still here," hospital sources said. They said the deceased worker was from the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The reason behind the accident has not yet been ascertained officially.
