Muscat: An international drug smuggling gang that tried to bring OMR2.5 million worth of narcotics into Oman has been busted by Royal Oman Police (ROP).
The Drug Enforcement Department of the ROP foiled the attempt last Thursday when it arrested six suspects of Asian nationality.
Following a tip-off that one of the drug peddlers had coordinated with an international gang to bring in a large quantity via the sea, the ROP launched a major operation keeping watch on the boat as it entered the Omani regional waters.
The suspect met the international gang of five at the beach near the wilayat of Barka and drove them in his vehicle.
The ROP swooped down upon all six of them in the Mabbala area of the wilayat of Seeb and recovered a large quantity of morphine, estimated at 2,591 capsules along with 20 other drug pills.
The police also recovered OMR3,000 that they had collected as proceeds from the sale of drugs as well as money in other Gulf currencies.
The official added that the quantity of drug seized was huge and enough to be split into 250,000 doses.
One of the accused was found to have a criminal record and was already wanted by the authorities here for drug related crimes.
All the accused were referred to the Public Prosecution for further investigation and trial.
