Muscat: Muttrah Fort is located on top of a rocky hill overlooking the harbour, guarding the entry to Muscat from the sea.
A medieval edifice built by the Portuguese in the 1850s, it has three circular towers.
The largest among these sits at the summit while the other two occupy points west and north of it, respectively.
The north tower still holds one of the old cannons of the fort.
Muttrah Fort is now open for visitors from Saturday to Thursday, from 9 am to 4 pm. On Fridays, from 8 am to 11 am and 2 pm to 4 pm.
