Expat worker in Oman sentenced to two years in prison

Muscat: An expat worker has been sentenced to two years in prison and the shop he worked at has now been shut down, the Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP) has announced.
Officials from PACP said that the worker who will subsequently be deported was found forging expiry dates of products in a shop in Muttrah.
According to PACP’s statement online, “During an inspection campaign, inspectors from the authority discovered a foreign worker who was falsifying the validity dates of expired products using a special stamp.
"Inspectors recognised the sealed dates on some of the brands he sold, [and found that they were] similar to laser printed labels, a fact confirmed by specialists. It was determined that workers in the shop added their own production and expiry dates before sealing the products. On further investigation, inspectors found that the seal was used to falsify labels for 270 different body care products."
According to officials, the case was referred to the judiciary who ruled against the defendant and convicted him “of trading in fraudulent goods and ordered to imprison him for two years followed by deportation”. The defendant was also fined OMR500 and the shop will now remain shut for two years.
PACP calls on all traders and product suppliers to abide by the Consumer Protection Law, its executive regulations, and keep consumers safe.
