Muscat: Oman’s Ministry of Defence has moved to evacuate the inhabitants of the Hallaniyat Islands, which could strongly feel the impact of cyclone Mekunu, that is currently 160 km away from Salalah.

“An evacuation of citizens and residents from the Hallaniyat Islands to safe areas started today,” announced the ministry. “The Royal Air Force of Oman carried out a number of flights today to avoid the potential effects of tropical storm Mekunu in support of the efforts exerted by all the government security agencies in the civil and other sectors of the Sultanate.”

Wind speeds of up to 160kph are expected, with Mekunu likely to make landfall on Thursday afternoon.
